On his inauguration day in his new role, Zohran Mamdani pledged to “reinvent” New York City, declaring “a different age” and an audacious start to his term.

An Unprecedented Leader

The new democratic socialist, who was a virtually unknown state assemblyman, has become the city's first Muslim mayor. He also made history by being the first to be take the oath of office using the Islamic holy text.

“A time such as this comes rarely and even more uncommon is it that the citizens whose hold the controls for transformation,” Mamdani remarked.

Rejecting advice to lower expectations, the mayor was emphatic: “I will do no such thing. The only expectation I seek to redefine is that of limited ambitions. Beginning today we will rule expansively and audaciously.”

Governing with Socialist Convictions

Mamdani openly embraced his core beliefs. “I was elected as a democratic socialist and I will govern as one. I will not forsake my convictions for worry of being called extreme,” he proclaimed to an enthusiastic response.

The inauguration was a dual event, beginning with a late-night oath-taking in a old subway station. He was officially inaugurated on the front steps of city hall by Vermont independent senator Bernie Sanders, who spoke of Mamdani's ascent as a victory over powerful interests.

An Ambitious Policy Agenda

Mamdani now faces one of the most unrelenting jobs in American politics, with a platform including:

• Subsidized daycare
• No-cost bus transit
• A cap on rents for approximately 1 million households
• A trial program of municipally-operated grocery stores

The projected $10 billion price tag of these initiatives may be challenging to fund. Mamdani has vowed to raise taxes on the wealthiest New Yorkers and corporations. However, as a municipality subject to the state government, he will require the legislative support of Governor Kathy Hochul.

Managing Political Dynamics

The new mayor will deal with apprehension from some members of the Jewish community alarmed by his past criticisms regarding Israel. Sensitivities were highlighted during the transition when a senior aide resigned over controversial past comments.

Mamdani has attempted to smooth over these tensions by convincing Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch to stay on, preventing the appearance of losing a Jewish police chief.

On the national stage, former President Donald Trump has labeled Mamdani a “socialist” and threatened withholding government money. Despite this, a prior encounter between the two was reportedly unexpectedly cordial.

The Fundamental Challenges of Governing

Ultimately, New York mayors are evaluated by their success in providing city upkeep: sanitation, reducing the rat infestation, fixing potholes, and ensuring smooth subway operation.

Outgoing Mayor Eric Adams highlighted his team's anti-crime efforts, pointing to historically low numbers of murders and gun violence in 2025, with murders recorded.

As his work starts, Mamdani and his wife will relocate from their Queens apartment to the stately mayoral residence. The previous occupant offered a unusual warning about a reputed resident spirit in the home, which allegedly only troubles those who do not act to “do right by the city.”

Mamdani ended his remarks with a simple declaration: “The work has only just begun.”
