The pace bowler has secured 309 Test scalps in 71 five-day games with an stellar bowling average.

Australia's selection chief Bailey has stated that captain Pat Cummins will play a "major part" in the forthcoming Ashes series.

Rumors had circulated that the 32-year-old might miss the series due to a persistent back stress problem that was still troubling him.

Earlier indications from team management suggested no final decision had been made regarding his involvement, with the five-Test series set to start on November 21 in Western Australia.

Bailey expressed that Cummins is "building up" and remained hopeful about the prospects of taking part.

"We know that the clock is ticking and there are permutations around that, aside from his injury, but additional elements," the selector added.

"It's positive. There's strong faith that he'll participate in a significant role. Ideally from the opening match. Otherwise, we'll reassess."

Injury History

He was sidelined the ODI and T20 games against India and New Zealand in the previous weeks after examinations confirmed a lumbar bone stress.

There is a track record of back injuries, with flare-ups in 2012-13, 2013-14 and 2015-16 causing him to miss multiple domestic campaigns in a limited period.

Cummins stated he would be ""aggressive" and "take risks" in his rehabilitation process to make the squad for the series.

The selector indicated that there was no confirmation if he had started his bowling workouts as part of his comeback but acknowledged it was "pressing" for him to regain fitness for the initial match.

Contingency Plans

If he's unavailable, former captain Steve Smith will assume leadership.

Versatile player Green was excluded lately from the ODI lineup for their one-day international series against India as a safety move because of discomfort in his torso.

The selector characterized it as a "minor" injury and mentioned that Green will play in the Sheffield Shield, so will be "well-prepared to resume bowling."

"Considerable effort has gone into developing the strategy for him to be available for the initial game as an all-rounder," he elaborated.

"His involvement was limited to the initial matches in any case. His aggressive style the bat in limited-overs, if it causes any delay for another day, we just made the decision to take a cautious route."
